Style Essentials: The Chelsea Boot

Chelsea boots from Whistles and Aigle

I could talk about my favourite fashion subject, shoes, for a very long time, but in particular I love to chat about my shoe holy-grail, the chelsea boot. It took me so long to find a pair I liked enough to wear daily; I find boots quite hard to shop for because I'm short and it's hard to find a pair that doesn't give you the dreaded 'stump leg' but these particular styles from Whistles and Aigle seem to avoid that syndrome!

I posted my first 'Style Essential' round up on the heeled ankle boot, so it made sense that another shoedrobe cornerstone should be a more day to day style of boot. These are boots you'll have forever, to wear with everything and be the go-to pair for popping to the shop or going out for a casual evening.

Of course, my summer style essential is the ballet flat (post on that coming soon!)
but for the winter months, I can't stand to be cold and so a boot is a must have. The Whistles pair are leather and they keep my feet so warm, they also haven't stretched at the elastic like some chelsea boots do. They weren't cheap when new but were a worthy investment as I've  worn them so much. They look great with skirts and trousers alike and are so comfortable.

Tips for finding the perfect pair of chelsea boots would include being prepared to try on lots of different styles until you find the perfect ones for you, and shopping around for different fits. I found the Topshop ones to be very wide and not a great fit at all, and it wasn't until I tried the Whistles pair that I realised it would be possible to get flat boots that didn't make it look like you were wearing wellies! If you are going to invest, choose a neutral colour that you can wear season after season, and treat them well; regular reheeling and a touch of polish will keep them going strong.
