Velvet Crush

All velvet pieces by Esprit

There's no denying that velvet is the fabric of the season, in a way that hasn't been seen for a while. Pleated, crushed or burnt out, designers have taken this plush fabric and applied it to all sorts of different items, meaning that whether you love the fabric or aren't overly keen, there's a way that you can incorporate it into your look.

I always feel that velvet adds such a luxury element to any look and whilst pastel pink, silver, mink and emerald tones have been trending for a while, there's nothing better than inky black velvet when it comes to dressing for an evening. I've already got my hands on a pair of velvet shoes this season, and I love this style - the platform sole makes them super wearable and the circular pin buckle is another attention to detail touch that elevates these sandals from the norm. Pair them with glitter socks for a really edgy look or simply rock a polished pedi to really offset any partywear outfit.

Dresses are a must have for Christmas parties, but everyone who knows me will attest that I adore a jumpsuit. They make a real statement and are a great alternative to an LBD - just as classy and elegant, too. This one has a beautiful camisole styled top, (in velvet, of course) which is offset by the looser crepe legs. This would look equally amazing with heels or even with the 'party trainer' (think embellished or feathered) for a high fashion winter look.

Bomber jackets show no sign of going away and this velvet version is the perfect update to an evening jacket. Throw it on over your jumpsuit for a casual-cool touch or fasten some brooches to it and wear it with jeans and a tee shirt during the day. Think of it as a replacement for the trusty leather jacket - it's just as versatile and easy to wear, too.

Are you crushin' on velvet this season?
