Socks & Sandals

Velvet sandals c/o Truffle Collection at Simply Be

Christmas season is as good an excuse as any to treat yourself to some new partywear, and if you buy one thing for the festive period, make it velvet. Whether you pick a dress or a pair of shoes (as I did!) it's the fabric of the season and is going nowhere. The beauty of velvet lies in its ability to make everything look a little bit more luxe, so you can get some mileage out of the pieces; whether they are for Christmas parties, New Year festivities or even nights out later in the year, they will work hard in your wardrobe.

Party shoes are a great way to update an outfit you might not have got as much wear from as you would have liked. I have the most amazing jumpsuit which I get to wear only a handful of times a year as it is very 'black tie' and therefore not really suitable for swinging around the pubs; it's special so it is one of the few items I keep for best. To make it less formal, these knot front velvet block heels provide just the right amount of playful.

Simply Be have a huge range of party shoes and I was drawn to this style by Truffle Collection as I loved the decadent fabric and - crucially - the block heel. I used to wear the highest of heels all the time, but as I've got older, I much prefer the comfort and ease a block heel provides. Not to sound too old fashioned, but uncomfortable shoes are my worst; I feel grumpy and annoyed if my feet hurt, the quickest way to ruin a night out! Also, who wants to be tottering about on the dancefloor? I like to be able to throw a few shapes without the fear of hitting the deck!

I've recently really enjoyed wearing funky socks with my favourite loafers and I thought that the look would translate to these heels, too. I adore the contrast of textures of the velvet and the glittery socks, and I think with a black dress, a bare leg and a glittery ankle sock, a sandal is the perfect way to finish a look. Also a win if you can't be bothered to paint your toenails!
